10:13 pm - January 13, 2004 I suppose I should start with the fact that I have a new job. That's right. After an initial interview, a series of essay questions, a follow up interview, a board interview, and a staff interview, I was hired as the new Exec. Director of the nonprofit I work at. I think this is an exciting opportunity to really build something fantastic. The place is incredible. There are three other full-time staff, two part-time staff, and a faculty of about 40 art and music instructors. It's such a shift from BIGfem and KIDfarce -- the two places I have spent most of my career. BIGfem did some good work but completely fucked its employees on salaries and policies while the top 4 people were making SHITloads of cash. All in the name of the movement. KIDfarce was so threatened by untangling the megalomaniacal threads of their fearful leader that they wouldn't know how to run a healthy office if it bit them on the ass and flailed about screaming, "I am the way to run a healthy office." As most who know me would tell you, I am hardly a competitive person, but I can't help but feeling now that VerucaAmish and I have really pulled ourselves together and strategically won against the forces of dirty politics, megalomania (it's a good word, so I use it often) and the elaborate fear and destroy games these offices played. "Fuck All Y'all" is all I have to say to them. Moving on . . . So this opportunity is a substantial one. I'd love to hear from folks about what they think makes a good boss or leader. I have my own ideas and I will put them here eventually, but I'd love input by the handful of folks who still read me. (Thanks) The holidays were pretty fantastic with the exception of the emergency. My father ended up in the hospital after an emergency where he lost 1/2 his blood and had to have a transfusion, etc. He is doing fine now, but it was pretty rough. I am very grateful my mom was home and able to hear him yelling to call 911. It could have been much worse. It was very interesting to see what it looked like to retire. My parents are just at 60 and retired now. Dad has been disabled for years so mom is finally catching up to him basically. I guess the best thing was seeing that my dad finally had my mom around a bit more. He has not been able to drive for many years so he lived somewhat on her schedule -- a packed schedule. Mom was a teacher and the leader of the teacher's union as well as a very acive supporter of all her school's activities. Now they have time to hang out and plan their new life. This includes moving to an active living adult resort community. OK, it is something like that. It is hard to describe without it sounding like either a retirement home on one extreme or a orgiastic swingers nudist colony on the other. Truth be told, it is both. OK-- not really. It's basically a huge development in the plains of Texas with pools and amenities and lots of retiring people who want a sense of community. It sounded awful at first but, we visited and loved it. We want to run the scrapbooking for parents of GLBT folks club when we come visit. The other highlight of the trip was going out with my brother and his girlfriend for a beer and playing pool. This seems like a thing that many older brothers do with their younger brothers, but it just hasn't happened. I think we are both in chill mode when we are home, so we are less inclined to be going out. Neither of us know many people there any more so we mostly stick to home with the occasional excursion to dinner or a movie. Basically, it felt great to just go have a beer, shoot some pool, and hang out in a smoky bar. It just seemed right. And his badass girlfriend kicked both of our asses at pool. One more for the sistahs! Hell yeah. VerucaAmish showed up just as our huge family Christmas brunch was winding down. My fag-hag aunt was still there which made us both very happy. We gave her gay porn erotica last Christmas and she almost cried as she proudly showed it to my dad who is liberal but not THAT liberal. Needless to say, my aunt is special in many ways. We caught up and just checked in with one another. He stayed the last several days and we had a blast running around, eating Mexican food, seeing people, etc. Well, I am sure I am leaving many things out. Just to top off an already long entry, I am posting a delicious recipe I love so much I could scream. Enjoy! And sign the guestbook -- I mean shit, you made it this far . . BSMQ's (Better than Sam's Mini Quiche (with NEVER FAIL crust) These can be made with a variety of fillings. We have made these for several events and parties and they are always very popular!
