23:43 - Sunday, Jul. 27, 2003 I reasoned that the only people who can really help us meet such lofty budget goals are contacts who can write fat checks. You know, the ones with at least four zeroes on them (with at least one number before them). Typically, the people who can write these checks are heavily invested in the stock market (read: people who have just lost a shitload of money). Their lack of confidence in the economy, coupled with this huge loss, puts them in the same boat as foundations, our other primary source of income. So we are doubly screwed. Not to mention the fact that as the economy tanks and everyone, including the U.S. goes into deeper and deeper debt, the more people seek the resources of service providing nonprofits. SO we need to meet more and more demand with less funds. And I know nonprofit arts and political advocacy groups are not the only ones that are hurting. People are hurting. And it seems like quite a lot of them are hurting across the board. Yes, I too think that the rich fuckers are not hurting. The weapons builders and defense contractors are not hurting. But haven't a lot of the top 1%ers lost a shitload of money in the stock market? Haven't they felt the pinch, even if it is just a baby one? How could you be behind this president? I simply do not understand it. He is not looking out for us as a people. In fact, he is looking out for a very small group of people that most of us hardly even know. But somehow, people like him (ok his approval is down to 57% or so). Why? What is it? The economy has tanked, we have less rights than we did before he took office, the deficit is headed towards the worst ever, unemployment rates are ridiculous, we fought a war based on misleading information and lies. What gives? Why? I just don't understand why.
